Beyond the Tree – Medjehu Project 2024, Exhibitions
«Beyond the tree. A journey into the traditions of Egyptian woodcraft» exhibition, commissioned for Medjehu Project, is a green adventure that started in September of 2024 while wandering through Luxor, Fayoum and Cairo, chasing trees and wood artisans in ancient tombs and modern landscapes and villages.
This exhibition highlights the trees that have been used in Egypt since ancient times and the world that surrounds and benefits from them. The acacia, tamarisk, jujube and sycamore fig trees we came across wandering around Luxor, Fayoum and Cairo are the last witnesses to a heritage that must be protected. Some of the trees presented in the exhibition are over two hundred years old and form an integral part of a plural Egyptian landscape.
Using Egyptian trees as a common thread to create a link between yesterday and today, the exhibition consists of a selection of 60 pictures that invites the viewer on a journey into the traditions of Egyptian woodcraft.
The exhibition «Beyond the tree. A journey into the traditions of Egyptian woodcraft» was first on display in Alcalá de Henares (Colegio de Caracciolos, UAH, 9th December 2024-10th January 2025), then it travelled to Cairo (Mounira Palace, Institut Français d’Archéologie Orientale -IFAO, 12th June -12th July 2025), and finally it travelled to the University of Jaén in September 2025.
